Why yes, I did spend too much time on making up titles, and none on making something gameable. Maybe that will come later.

Special thanks to Spwack for the generator generator here: https://slightadjustments.blogspot.com/p/generator.html
Thank you very much, this is very useful to me.
ReplyDeleteYou know I deeply appreciate idiosyncratically themed gods ;)! Your generators are always excellent, but as you also know I often tend to prefer bespoke creations, but also this case, as with some of your other generators, is uniquely suited to randomization.
ReplyDeleteSo much of what makes real mythological gods interesting to me, and that makes so many fictional ones fall flat, is the extent to which, despite our efforts, they often don't map cleanly to specific concepts, or at least not specific concepts as conceived from a modern categorical framework. When fantasy gods are just clean mappings to modern or pseudo-historical categories like death or water or war, they feel one-dimensional, less than human, let alone divine.
In reading these, one has to actually make the connections for themselves, what it means to be a god of "slaughter, nowhere, and dreams" or "stars, disgust, and the old", and in so doing, create something multi-dimensional, that meaningfully reflects some worldview.
I could easily imagine generating a handful of these, and reverse engineering a whole world from it, this is awesome.
"Reaping Empress, the god of autumn, the old, and space.
ReplyDeleteThey are worshiped by their monstrous demi-god children.
This god's primary rites involve giving alms, asceticism, and parading an idol."
