Friends of the blog Hilander and grace have both recently posted along the theme of "What is something only I could write?". It's a theme that's resonated with me - what is something only semiurge could write? If you didn't read the title of this post, perhaps you are getting excited, thinking I am going to finally come up with another entry for the Hoard of a Hundred Horrors, or another write-up for the quasi-elemental planes series. No, sorry. But this too is something only I could write.
People in the Discord servers I frequent - otherwise intelligent, discerning people - have a superstitious attitude towards AI akin to thinking that Dungeons & Dragons is Satanic, or that there are witches who will steal your penis, keep it in a box, and feed it oats. They recoil from it like a vampire from a cross.
My brother, who I love and admire in many respects, who is my model for how a man should be, is on the opposite side of the AI-attitude spectrum. He uses it extensively for work and for amusements like vibe-coding games about his dog. He is convinced it will render human labour obsolete within a decade or two.
I do not care about AI. AI is already over - the interesting question now is what will be done with all these data centers to attempt to recoup their cost. It can be an entertaining toy, but I had a remotely-controlled bulldozer as a kid which was much more entertaining (as below, so above - this is the foolishness of God which is greater than the wisdom of man - the cheap drone triumphant over the expensive techno-optimistic widget).
My compatriots couldn't write this because they dread AI. My brother couldn't write this because he doesn't RPG blog. So here I am - I've never had a problem with drinking poison.
I have tried using AI for roleplaying. Is it any good for that? So as not to overly-waste your time: No, it isn't. How it works and what it's designed for run counter to good roleplaying. It can't model and keep straight spaces like dungeons, struggles with casts of characters beyond a handful, the names and ideas it comes up with are stupid, its agreeableness undermines tension, and so on and so on. Maybe if your taste in roleplaying runs more to coffeeshop AU stuff, or pretending that Sonic the Hedgehog is putting chili and a hotdog bun on your penis before fellating it, then it might work better for you.
A lesser mind would wrap this up with some bromide about seeking human connection, instead of an artificial and imaginary substitute in the embrace of the machine. You are capable of reading and operating a computer or phone, so I don't need to tell you that any more than I need to tell you to brush your teeth or wipe your ass.
Instead I say: Dream while you can, for a red dawn is rising, and by its light sleep will come less easily, and less restfully.
Tasty post speed racer 😋🌭"a superstitious attitude towards AI akin to thinking that Dungeons & Dragons is Satanic, or that there are witches who will steal your penis, keep it in a box, and feed it oats" yes it do be like that
ReplyDeleteIt's me. I have the superstitious approach to AI and I am happy with that. Despite that I have actually played in games where the ref used AI and it was disturbing or not especially useful and occasionally charming. Still going to avoid it moving forward
ReplyDeleteOn the AI is Devil vs. God-type debate I probably lean slightly more towards the middle even than you (I don't even like putting these things in an axis, let alone a binary), but generally agree with the sentiment, although with you I can't always tell if it's a shit-post in the first place :p. Is that true about your brother?
ReplyDeleteAnyway you're ideas and voice are so novel and glorious that I have no doubts that it could not replace you.
I've played around with AI for RPG/worldbuilding stuff as well and actually have gotten some surprisingly decent stuff out of it, but I found that it was too difficult of a mode switch to go from using the AI and creating for myself, so to the extent that I use it at all for RPG stuff anymore it's strictly for organizational or research purposes, and even then I keep it to a minimum.
Which part about my brother?
