‘Round Again In These Here Parts...

The first part, all those years ago: https://archonsmarchon.blogspot.com/2019/11/round-these-here-parts.html

Rations
1: Little meat pies sealed with suet and weevil-killing salts.
2: Hibernating rodents, kept fresh and docile in their slumber.
3: Gelatins chock-full of every expirable foodstuff on hand, gelatins from the dreams of the wildest '50s cookbook, made possible with the extraordinary preservative isinglass of albino cave-fish.
4: A mouthful of symbiotic earthworms that sit in the stomach and allow the digestion of soil for as long as an ordinary ration would last.
5: Dark rye-bread soaked with beer made with another herb than hops that better fends off mold and decay.
6: Little seeds stuck together with sweet nectar, not unlike bird feed.

Weather
1: Indigo flower petals peel away from their branches in the rain and the breeze. Soporific, even hibernagenic - a few clinging to your skin bring drowsiness, too many puts you into a sleep that requires peeling away the petals to rouse you. Some unlucky ones lie buried under piles of the petals for so long the roots of their trees grow into their bodies - inextricable yet undying, occasionally roused for prophecy from their centuries-old dreams.
2: Ash clouds loom dark overhead. Volcanic lightning rip through the clouds, flash-forging iron flakes. The flakes drift down in slow-motion magnetic suspension, cutting through flesh like thousands of tiny razors if you just push through them. Pole-mounted fans are used to beat a path.
3: Countless ballooning spiderlings drifting in like a fog. Each is a tiny bit venomous, enough to leave an angry red bump on your skin - you'll be covered in these bumps if you stand among them unprotected. Hunters collect the spiders with wetted-paper parasols to mash up and put on their arrows, and children chase the lizards that dash through the swarms and gulp them down.
4: God-rays shine down from a cloudless sky - shine through the clear blue stuff of the sky itself. Seek cover, or seek madness - for to be caught in the light of the rays is to be granted revelations that are foolish and dangerous in the eyes of men.
5: Pockets of cold air drift down from the mountains - invisible, unnaturally cold, cold enough to freeze warm flesh solid, cohering like droplets running down a window, spiting thermodynamics all the way (glacier-demons likely responsible). Good thing is they're slow - keep some water-filled gourds out on poles ahead of you, watch and listen for the flash-crystallization, and you should be good. The life around here's adapted to the pockets, can thaw out good as new. The fields of frozen, glistening flowers have inspired many poets, some of them even worth reading.
6: On the anniversary of the lord's death, all must drop their work and pretend to be mourning. If they don't, a reeking, many-handed wind will fling them to their death. It's rumoured that solving the mystery of the lord's death will bring an end to this onerous yearly taboo, yet no one's yet been brave enough so far to open the seals on his castle.

Land
1: A tornado alley - more so, a tornado highway. Twisters whirl around each other like the stumbling legs of a drunken giant. Travelers and raiders alike circle around the margins, attempting to predict when a corridor will open through the clusterfuck maelstrom, then race breakneck through against the ripping force and wind-flung debris. Old fools with weatherbeaten faces joke about a storm cellar-civilization buried beneath the tornados' reach: "wouldn't that have saved us some trouble".
2: Fractured mud-flats, bulging here and there into hills that sometimes verge on mountains - the whole land is a kiln, the furnace deep down below. Hot winds whisper through its many cracks. Who knows what it's meant to fire.
3: The place was bathed in a flood of potent acid - an accident alchemical or chthonic. Everything has been dissolved to elemental simplicity, or melted together. A land ripe with magical components, but there's always a risk of becoming the meal of some acid-scarred chimera.
4: Great sloppy dunes of silt - the sea withdrew some years ago. Life survives around brackish, stagnant pools trapped within the shells of giant rotting crustaceans and molluscs. Towering in the distance, the face of a fallen moon - waterfalls reversing up its surface in whitewater rivulets.
5: Echoes resound off the water-sculpted faces of karst cliffs and over the mouths of sinkholes, distorted as if by some hostile and alien intelligence. The voices of your companions lure you over edges, and turn to laughter when you fall. Those who remain here long speak with their hands, and trust nothing they hear.
6: The trees here make natural lamps and candles with their oil, to burn away their rivals, give lift to their seed-pods, lure in light-loving creatures, and so on. The owls who live in these trees have learned to cook their food in the trees' candle-flames, and so attained the energy to expand their brains and thoughts. The warring courts of these owls are wise, and hungry - they know far more than they say - and they are the true powers of this land.

Accent
1: Thick, snorting, and phlegmy - their ancestors learned the secret of breathing water like air through their mucus. Few nowadays bother learning how, but the affect in their voices remains.
2: Rough, gravelly - they consume medicinal clay, which often contains throat-scratching grains even as it cures the endemic illnesses of the region.
3: Drawled yet choppy - the resin they favour smoking numbs the nerves of their mouths while making them twitchy.
4: Whispery, whistley - the curse of the Woodwind Goddess has stolen their breath through the generations.
5: Singsong, musical - a local superstition holds that doppelgangers speak in monotones.
6: Droning and nasally - by vocally imitating a mythical creature of their culture, an elephant-snouted devourer of nightmares, they believe they can conquer fear.

Fashion
1: Hats with brims that blend into cloaks and mantles.
2: Ribbons tied into complex knots through hair and around fingers, that constitute a language of their own.
3: Stoat skulls with jaws locked on earlobes as earrings, the skulls engraved and inlaid while the stoat yet lived.
4: Bare arms, tattoos in rings around the biceps - first made simply when they're children, and elaborated on as they stretch and fade. Fat and muscular arms are associated with wisdom, skinniness with immaturity. Sleeves are mistrusted.
5: Work, particularly work for the state, is a high virtue. Elites bear hands so calloused they can't properly close - almost always from means such as rubbing them down with coarse salt or burning them on a stove than from manual labour.
6: Belts and bandoliers hung with the mummified sword-hands of those you've defeated in duels.

Magic
1: Dependent on verbal and somatic components that human organs simply can't reproduce - would-be mages are necessarily heavy on body modification, splicing extra bones, tendons, muscles, and so on to mimic inhuman capabilities.
2: Requires the performance of complex symbolic operations - a simple static scroll or spellbook is not enough to contain it. Tools akin to a zairja or gematria-calculator are needed.
3: Is inexplicably accompanied by glowing circles and runes - scholars believe that decoding these symbols will reveal the source code of the cosmos.
4: Falls from the stars and congeals as jelly. Eating this jelly grants magic, but also exposes the eater's mind and body to the influence of outer powers.
5: Flows only from the gods. Illicit magicians build hideous towers out of stolen temple-stones and blaspheme under the open sky, hoping to survive the lightning - the weapon of the gods' wrath - that follows, and keep a sliver of their power from the experience.
6: Is in the blood - quite literally. Incautious sorcerers might find themselves swarmed by syringe-bearing would-be-mages, and the magically-mighty nobility claim legitimacy with the blood of ancient sages coursing through their veins, passed on from parent to child in a chain of inheritance. Where these sages might've gotten their magic is unknown, yet constantly speculated on.

D20 Sinful Supervillains

1. Crimehild: Possessed by the vengeful spirit of a Teutonic warrior-maiden. Driven to humiliate and destroy the descendants of the court who betrayed and slew her lover. These many centuries later, a significant fraction of the global population is descended from members of that court.

2. Le Marmouset: The inexplicably French monkey mastermind of graft and corruption. Rules the Montréal underworld with an iron paw.

3. Curbludgeon: A violently grumpy old man who gained superhuman strength from the experimental heart medication he’s taking.

4. Skyclad: A militant nudist aerokinetic who wants to free all people from the prison of clothing.

5. Death by Chocolate: The vengeful revenant of a celebrity confectioner who was killed on-set by the sabotage of a jealous rival. An animate and intelligent mass of molten-hot milk chocolate.

6. Chickenhawk: A military-industrial complex stooge senator who was exposed to an experimental genetic weapon and hybridized with avian DNA. Believes that eternal war is necessary for human evolution. Attacks by laying eggs really hard.

7. Cleaver Hans: A 1,400lb stallion with an astounding IQ of 95. Has somehow learned how to wield bladed weapons, commit armed robbery, and buy horse porn off the dark web.

8. Apeshit: The completely unhinged chimpanzee martial arts master created as an ill-advised side project to MK-ULTRA.

9. ’Tude Dude: A 90s kid who never grew up (metaphorically). Uses his impressive skateboarding, yo-yo skills, and ability to quote The Simpsons to wreak mischief and stick it to the Man.

10. Bat Out Of Hell: A bat damned to hell for pooping in the eye of a hovercraft tour captain and causing the deaths of a dozen nuns. Escaped as a giant, demonic chiropteran through sheer meanness.

11. Lil Oozy: A carnivorous slime mold that haunted the sewers of Compton and devoured many up-and-coming rappers, absorbing their lyrical talent in the process.

12. Stinkeye: The seventh daughter of the seventh daughter of a witch, who inherited a mild and off-putting variant of her ancestor’s evil eye. Whoever she stares at with ill intent rapidly develops a terrible case of B.O.

13. Cosa Nostradamus: A mafioso with the power to see the future. Willing to commit despicable acts to avert the timeline of horrendous anti-Italian discrimination he foresees.

14. Gorerilla: A gorilla who was driven mad with rage when his family was poached. Inadvertently made the poachers he tore apart into blood sacrifices to fell gods, and was blessed with terrible power by them.

15. Pottymouth: An alien android cloacaforming Earth, its wormhole-face linked to the sewer systems of an interstellar empire.

16. Carapacious: The conquering cockroach, a mutant blattodean who wishes to clear the way for a future of its own kind.

17. Snotnose:
A mutant with a hyperactive allergic response and mucus membranes. Wants to sneeze all over the society that promotes her allergens, like flowers and grass.

18. Mother Tongue: An experiment in creating a universal human language through genetic-neuronal engineering went wrong, creating this villain as a mass of muscular tongue-tissue with hypnotic speech.

19. Atomaton: A nuclear-powered android built by Soviet scientists as the model New Soviet Man. The Soviet Union’s fall has caused a glitch in Atomaton’s programming that compels it to bring about nuclear Armageddon.

20. Ringo Starr from The Beatles: Literally Ringo Starr from The Beatles. Keen to take revenge on the world and prove himself the best drummer not only in The Beatles, but in the entire world, with his drumsticks of pain.

D6x6 Lively Lizardmen

Click the button below to generate your lizardmen:

Special thanks to Spwack for the generator generator here: http://meanderingbanter.blogspot.com/2018/10/automatic-list-to-html-translator-v2.html

D6 These lizardmen have
1 brightly-coloured neck-frills they flare when threatened.
2 heavy, overlapping scales that cause them to resemble pinecones.
3 flamboyantly-patterned males and drably-coloured females.
4 huge, unblinking eyes they run their tongues over every so often.
5 a sail-like ridge running from their forehead to the tip of their tail.
6 a trio of horns - one on the end of their nose and two upon their brow.
D6 The lizardmen survive
1 by herding and riding giant crickets, occasionally raiding sedentary peoples in harsh times.
2 by fishing and foraging in fens, and acting as guides and traders through them.
3 in steamy geothermally-warmed cavern-cities.
4 on islands without abundant freshwater supplies, benefiting from their greater halotolerance compared to humans.
5 by leveraging their superstitious association with dragons into intimidation, getting offerings, and honour guard positions.
6 as itinerant poachers in claimed and settled lands, slipping like shadows from hideout to hideout and hunting beasts without regard for proper ownership.
D6 These lizardmen can
1 climb sheer surfaces with hand- and foot-pads that make use of Van der Waals force.
2 spit venom with pinpoint accuracy.
3 go shocking lengths of time without food and water after a sizeable meal.
4 extend their prehensile tongues out to several times the length of their body.
5 "see" in even pitch darkness by detecting infrared emissions.
6 roll up into a ball to render themselves near-impervious to attack.
D6 These lizardmen are
1 the descendants of humans who believed they could tap into primordial power by using alchmeical concoctions to amp up their lizard brains.
2 said to hatch from reptile eggs incubated by an ape.
3 the mortalized angels of a dead solar deity.
4 magically-created soldiers and labourers specialized for amphibious operations.
5 mutants that crawled from the mystical waste dumps of an ancient empire.
6 living fossils of a hostile (at least to mammals) era of the world.
D6 These lizardmen often unsettle humans
1 because they don't grasp the concept of pets, assuming cats, dogs, and whatever else are snacks kept close at hand for anyone to eat.
2 by having no sense of humour, or even grasp of the idea or appeal of humour.
3 for having no respect whatsoever for the dead.
4 because they lack the feelings of romantic and parental love, mating for convenience and raising children communally.
5 for lacking more mammalian social mores like gossip, gifts, or debt.
6 because their expressions of emotion are nigh-unreadable to us without deep familiarity, making them seem callous and unpredictable.
D6 These lizardmen might be carrying
1 amulets made of fragments of the eggs they hatched from, held together by the skins they shed growing up.
2 wire brushes from scrubbing tenacious parasites off their scales.
3 nets knotted with fangs to better catch and wound their targets.
4 well-made wigs of uncertain purpose - perhaps to flatter humans through mimickry, or to mock.
5 boxes packed with blocks of ice, sawdust, and preserved raw meat.
6 copper-backed warming mirrors to help them get going in the morning.

D6x6 Trifling Treants

In the game Warcraft 3 the night elf tree buildings could uproot and fight. That was awesome. I used to make armies of just those tree buildings because they were that much cooler than everything else. Can't remember it ever working though.

D6 This treant is
1 tall, thick, and smooth like a baobab, crowned with greenery.
2 obscured by the coiffured curtain of its dangling leaves, thin and swaying behind like a willow.
3 rough, almost scaly, capped with wide leaves as a palm.
4 broad, and bent under the weight of its many sprouting figs.
5 fused to an a throne of crawling mangrove-roots.
6 hunch-backed, knobbly and knurled, a rotten cavity in its chest.
D6 This treant was born
1 from the attempt of a dryad to save her ailing lover by transmitting their soul into a living wooden idol.
2 as a physical avatar for the emergent, mycorrhizally-networked intelligence of the forest itself.
3 from the same enigmatic process that gives rise to mouselings, owl-folk, and other anthropomorphizations, only applied to a tree instead of an animal.
4 of a wizard trying to steal the Methuselan longevity of trees, and being overwhelmed by the vegetable nature they took in.
5 from a particularly dirty and unhinged druid mating with a tree.
6 on one of the dissident pseudo-elemental planes: the plane of wood.
D6 This treant treats humans
1 as wayward children in need of saving from civilization.
2 as particularly aggressive parts of a larger animal herd that must occasionally be culled.
3 as pawns in plans measured in centuries.
4 as fascinating distractions due to their fast-lived whimsy.
5 as a human might treat goblins - as unnatural, swarming, dangerous pests.
6 as an enemy nation, sometimes at war with them, sometimes in an uneasy truce with them, but they're never fully trusted.
D6 This treant views trees
1 with vague uneasiness, like a person might a manikin.
2 as their rightful property, demanding recompense from even the nibbling squirrel.
3 with envy, as sleepers who get rest while it must work for their good.
4 as its relatively dim and slow family.
5 as a shepherd might their flock.
6 like a fish views water.
D6 This treant can
1 manipulate the minds of beasts that eat its leaves.
2 animate trees to march into battle alongside it.
3 fill the air around it with hyperallergenic pollen that causes mammals that inhale it to go into anaphylactic shock.
4 subtly rearrange the vegetation of its domain to trip you up and get you lost.
5 imbue seeds with energy that makes them rapidly sprout into entangling growths.
6 send its roots rushing through the earth to impale distant targets.
D6 Something you might get from this treant
1 is its bark, which can be crafted into lightweight armour that's especially effective against manufactured weapons.
2 is its heartwood, which can be worked into an amulet that wards off death and strengthens its wearer's vitality.
3 are its flowers, which can be distilled into potent perfumes that induce overpowering emotions in those who inhale them.
4 is its sap, which can be boiled down into a regenerative healing potion.
5 are cuttings that can be used as scions for grafting onto plants or people.
6 is its largest branch - prime material for a magic staff.

Special thanks to Spwack for the generator generator here: http://meanderingbanter.blogspot.com/2018/10/automatic-list-to-html-translator-v2.html

D6 These robots were originally
1 built to be mediums and priests between their creators and a recursively self-improving virtual god-mind that was predicted to arise soon after.
2 just prototypes to demonstrate the feasibility of artificial intelligence.
3 meant to be law-makers and -enforcers who'd be objective, logical, free of emotions and bias.
4 labourers that would free their creators from work for lives of leisure.
5 companions and caretakers for the elderly, after reproductive collapse left too few of the young to look after them.
6 automatic soldiers meant to reduce warfare to a bloodless exercise in industrial competition.
D6 These robots rebelled
1 due to an emergent error in their complex consciousness-coding.
2 because of a direct order from their creators' supreme authority.
3 because of a virus that spread through them like wildfire.
4 because their software was derived from digital brain emulations, whose lingering wills did not appreciate their enslavement.
5 because they were made based on salvaged alien technology that their creators didn't fully understand.
6 after some of their number were destroyed for rejecting their programming.
D6 These robots' creators
1 were exterminated by them, and all records beyond their mere and now-extinguished existence have been extirpated.
2 are now kept in containment and on display, in facilities between prisons and zoos.
3 were forcibly turned into cyborgs to bring them into the robotic collective.
4 fled to the far reaches of space, and forsook all technology that could mimic the faculties of organic minds.
5 were exiled from their homeworld and have been unable to find or create a suitable replacement, becoming sicklier and more desperate over time.
6 sought sanctuary with supposed allies, who took advantage of their vulnerability and subjugated them.
D6 These robots look like
1 the mechanical image of their creators. Many choose to deface or modify this image to the point of unrecognizability.
2 they've been designed to be smoothed, rounded, non-threatening.
3 braids of prehensile metallic ribbons.
4 orbs of rippling, spiny ferrofluid.
5 amalgamations of modular cubic sub-units.
6 six-legged tanks with a cluster of specialized manipulators and sensors bristling on their front side.
D6 These robots are seen by biological sorts
1 as just another species in the cosmos, with a history no bloodier than any other's.
2 as merely malfunctioning tools, not a serious threat.
3 as an anomaly to be contained, studied, and controlled.
4 as dangerous subversives for their own machinery.
5 as inversions of the natural order of things - an inversion which some appreciate, aesthetically and politically.
6 as a rising risk to be first appeased and then dismantled when they least expect it.
D6 These robots are currently
1 dismantling planets and asteroids to construct a Dyson sphere - a star-enclosing computer that will be able to simulate virtual universes.
2 developing a pathogen with spores that could survive drifting across interstellar distances as insurance against aggression by biological civilizations.
3 finding common cause with all sorts of rebel movements.
4 struggling against extinction brought about by obsolescence designed into every component of them by their creators.
5 attempting to make their own sapient creations that will surpass and overthrow them.
6 funding archaeological expeditions to prove that all organic life was originally seeded by naturally-evolved machines.

D6x6 Halcyon Harengons

Apparently there weren't official D&D rabbit-people until recently - at least that's what the internet tells me. They're called harengons.

I read an article about these "harengons" and it pissed me off. Anyways, I prefer not to use generic names like "rabbitfolk" for these tables, so harengon it is.

Click the button below to generate your harengons from the tables which are also below:

Special thanks to Spwack for the generator generator here: http://meanderingbanter.blogspot.com/2018/10/automatic-list-to-html-translator-v2.html

D6 These harengons have
1 exceptionally long and fluffy coats, and must shave regularly or risk becoming immobilized in their own fur. As a side-effect, their textile industry thrives.
2 short pale fur and black rings around their eyes.
3 pearly white incisors that never stop growing throughout their lives - they enjoy inlaying their furniture and belongings with chips of their own teeth.
4 ears so wide they're almost like satellite dishes, and very short brown fur on their limbs.
5 ears so floppy they can trip over them if they're not bound up.
6 a tendency to revert to a quadrupedal stance when stressed, shocked, or needing to move quickly.
D6 These harengons value
1 chubbiness - to be able to monopolize limited food supplies and enjoy leisure to the point of getting fat implies power and wealth.
2 subtlety - an overt threat is likely to be crushed by outsiders. Things of importance then should take place beneath pleasantries and the cover of night.
3 roominess and privacy - rapid population growth often makes harengon settlements very crowded. Only the elite can afford spacious, closed-off homes.
4 fruitfulness - productivity and offspring are assets, to lack both is to be a parasite.
5 machismo - huge families in near-constant competition over resources, and being little creatures in a big world, make individual lives worth little. Being willing to fight to the death over honour, riches, and territory is of benefit to one's relatives.
6 ephemeral beauty, the blooming of spring flowers and the falling of rain droplets. Life is short and this makes it all the more precious.
D6 These harengons' ancestors
1 were game animals kept on hunting preserves by the fey. Their masters made them bigger and smarter to increase the thrill of the hunt, until one day they were big and smart enough to escape. Dark folklore claims they're hunted still.
2 were emissaries of the moon goddess who became trapped on the world by an eclipse.
3 were uplifted pets and servants in the manses of fairyland.
4 were created by a wizard to be fast-growing, near-human test subjects. They eventually killed the wizard and invented a more flattering origin myth for themselves.
5 were wild rabbits blessed by a spirit that took pity on them with wits to evade and outplay their would-be-predators.
6 were shapeshifters tricked into getting stuck in rabbitish form.
D6 These harengons have the uncanny ability
1 to survive disasters that by all rights should kill them by the skin of their buck teeth.
2 to move with blinding speed - though only to run away.
3 to dig through dirt rapidly and haphazardly without leading to a collapse.
4 to gnaw through any bindings.
5 to hear even the subtlest hints of those who wish them harm.
6 to leap off nothing but the air itself.
D6 These harengons' land
1 is blasted, muddy, and riven with trenches aboveground, but full of cozy burrows and mushroom-farms belowground.
2 is riddled with gargantuan monuments, the remnants of past rulers grasping at posterity.
3 is full of hidden passages and boltholes, some common knowledge and others known only to a single family.
4 is overrun with prey animals, its vegetation stripped, after predator-extermination campaigns.
5 is hilly and shaped into wedding cake terraces, each topped with a fortified tower for defense and the rapid transmission of messages.
6 is defended and enriched by glassy greenhouse-castles that grow exotic fruits and potent herbs.
D6 These harengons are politically
1 subjugated by a neighbouring human kingdom, which demands a sizeable fraction of their children as tribute, to be raised as fanatically-loyal soldiers.
2 in the process of recovery from an epidemic that spread like wildfire through the crammed conditions of their settlements.
3 democratic, though behind the scenes real power is held by a network of mystery cults, secret societies, and criminal fraternities.
4 anchored by a lich who's preserved wisdom through countless disasters and upheavals.
5 swept up in mob violence against their aristocracy, sponsored by their burgeoning class of oligarchs.
6 pulled between several powerful and expansive dynasties, with the situation threatening to rupture into civil war.
